We specialize in workplace law. We represent more labor unions than any other firm in West Michigan. We bring deep experience and powerful advocacy to individuals who’ve been unfairly treated in the workplace. And we defend the civil and constitutional rights of people who have been accused of crimes or discriminated against in society.

Wrongful Termination
If you believe you’ve been wrongfully terminated from your job, be in touch. While most employment is “at will,” if you were fired due to discrimination, sexual harassment, or retaliation, or if your employer violated your employment agreement or labor laws, you may have a case. As specialists in employment law, we’ve fought and won thousands of wrongful termination cases across the state.
Workplace Discrimination
Have you been discriminated against in the workplace based on your race, gender, religion, national origin, physical disability, or age? Have you been passed up for a job or promotion, terminated from your job, harassed or retaliated against because of discriminatory practices? Talk with us; we bring experienced legal expertise to those who’ve been unfairly or illegally treated in the workplace.
Unfair Wage Practices
The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requires almost all employers to pay employees the minimum wage and to pay non-exempt employees (hourly or salaried) 1½ times their regular rate for working overtime—more 40 hours a week. FSLA also provides for penalties against employers who discipline or discharge employees who complain about lack of wage practices. Talk with us if you think your rights have been violated. We’ve had resounding success recovering back wages and levying penalties against employers who violate FLSA standards.
Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) requires employers with 50 or more employees to provide up to 12 weeks of medical leave for employees who experience serious medical conditions or must care for close family members who are experiencing serious medical conditions. If you’ve been denied medical leave or have harassed, disciplined, or discharged for taking covered medical leave, talk with us. We’ll file the necessary claims to ensure your right to medical leave is protected under this federal act.
Sexual Harassment
Federal law prohibits sexual harassment in the workplace. Unwanted advances, requests for sexual favors, or other conduct of a sexual nature has no place in your workplace. If you’re facing sexual harassment on the job, talk with us. There are legal remedies available.
The Right to Organize
We’re the region’s go-to firm on labor law. We’re known experts in negotiating and enforcing collective bargaining agreements, ensuring compliance in labor law, and resolving disputes between management and labor.
Mediation and Negotiation
Mediation, arbitration, and negotiation can be powerful tools for resolving disputes without a court trial. We have decades of experience working with unions, workers, and businesses to craft timely, effective settlements that represent their interests and save time and money in the process. Talk to us if you’d like to learn more about our award-winning expertise settling even the most challenging disputes in the workplace and beyond.
Civil Liberties
We’re committed to fulfilling the promise of equality for all citizens. Our passion for defending civil rights and our legacy in constitutional law brings powerful advocacy on issues of free speech, police brutality and overreach, abusive government practices, Fourth Amendment search and seizure violations, government transparency (including Freedom of Information Act and Open Meetings Act), and equal rights. We go after unlawful discrimination of all kinds—including advocating for the rights of LGBT citizens, women, and those discriminated against based on race, age, gender, religion, or other factors.
